The BIGGA Kickstart Programme

Greenkeeping is an essential part of the overall management of a golf club, ensuring that the golf course remains in peak condition with high-quality playing surfaces, whilst balancing environmental sustainability and efficient resource management. The role of a greenkeeper extends far beyond mowing grass; it encompasses a range of skills including turf maintenance, machinery operation, course preparation and ecological conservation.

Greenkeepers must develop an understanding of the basic principles of turfcare, safe equipment handling and working collaboratively as part of a team. It should be noted that this programme is not a substitute for formal qualifications and Lantra professional short courses, but a stepping stone towards the next step on the BIGGA recommended Formal Education Pathway and Lantra approved training and assessment.

Module Overview

This entry-level programme in Greenkeeping has been designed as an accessible and supportive introduction to the fundamentals of golf course maintenance. It provides essential knowledge and practical understanding for those interested in pursuing a career in Greenkeeping, as well as those already working in the industry who wish to validate their skills and knowledge before potentially progressing to formal Level 2 qualifications and/or professional land-based Lantra short courses.

The award is particularly well suited for:

  • New entrants or career changers who have a keen interest in Greenkeeping and want to explore the profession through structured training before committing to employment or an apprenticeship.
  • Current employees in the golf or sports turf sector who are looking to gain recognition for their existing knowledge and basic competencies, and who may see this as a stepping stone to further qualifications on the BIGGA recommended Formal Education Pathway.
  • Mature learners or hobbyists who may not wish, or are unable to take an apprenticeship but are eager to develop their understanding of greenkeeping practices, either for personal or professional interest, or to contribute to local clubs on a voluntary, full or part-time basis.

This award offers flexible learning opportunities, focusing on the core principles of turf care, machinery use, health and safety, and environmental management. It provides a valuable foundation for anyone seeking to build confidence and competence in the essential tasks of greenkeeping without the commitment of full-time study or work-based apprenticeship standards and frameworks.

Building Working Relationships

Greenkeeping is a team-based profession where effective communication and collaboration are key to success. This module introduces learners to the principles of professional workplace relationships, helping them understand the importance of teamwork, cooperation and mutual respect. Greenkeepers must engage with colleagues, managers, club members and external contractors, requiring them to develop interpersonal skills that promote a positive and productive work environment. The module explores workplace etiquette, conflict resolution and how to contribute effectively to a team. Learners will be introduced to industry expectations, emphasising professionalism, reliability and adaptability in daily operations.

Basic Health & Safety

Health & Safety is a fundamental aspect of Greenkeeping, ensuring that all tasks and operational activities are performed at minimum risk to individuals, colleagues and golfers. This module provides an introduction to Health & Safety regulations, risk assessments and the identification of workplace hazards. Learners will develop an understanding of safe working practices, manual handling, chemical handling and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The module also covers emergency procedures, fire safety and first aid awareness, ensuring learners are well-prepared to help maintain a secure workplace.

Hand-held Powered & Non-Powered Equipment

Greenkeepers use a variety of tools and equipment to perform daily maintenance tasks. This module introduces learners to the correct handling, operation and maintenance of both powered and non-powered hand tools such as spades, rakes, shovels, strimmers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers. Safe handling techniques are emphasised to prevent accidents and ensure efficiency. Learners will also explore best practice for maintaining tools and equipment, to improve performance and prolong lifespan.

Pedestrian & Ride-On Powered Equipment

Pedestrian & ride-on powered equipment, including mowers, aerators, scarifiers and utility vehicles, are essential for maintaining large areas and play a crucial role in golf course maintenance. This module focuses on the operation and maintenance of these machines, teaching learners how to start, stop and manoeuvre them correctly, whilst maintaining safety. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of the machine settings and adjustments necessary to achieve optimal performance. This module also covers daily maintenance routines, such as cleaning and checking for damage/wear.

Tractors & Attachments

Tractors and their various attachments are invaluable assets in greenkeeping, enabling tasks such as aeration, top dressing and haulage. This module introduces learners in how to safely operate tractors, including coupling and uncoupling attachments, ensuring correct weight distribution and maintaining traction. Learners will also develop an understanding of stability considerations, maintenance requirements and legislative aspects related to tractor use.

Mowing a Fine Turf Area

Mowing is one of the most critical tasks in Greenkeeping, affecting both the aesthetics and playability of the golf course. This module focuses on best practice for mowing fine turf areas, such as greens, tees and fairways. Learners will explore different mowing patterns, mower set-up and the implications of height of cut adjustments. The importance of blade sharpness, roller impact and clipping removal will also be covered to ensure the learner is ready to mow to industry standard when advancing to formal qualifications.

Repairing Divots

Divot repair is essential for maintaining smooth and even playing surfaces whilst aiding recovery. This module covers the causes of divots, the correct way to fill and level them, and the materials and tools used for effective repair. Learners will explore the differences between divot repairs on tees, fairways and practice areas, as well as encouraging golfers to manage their own divots in the correct manner for each area.

Switching & Brushing

Switching and brushing are key practices for maintaining high-quality surfaces across a range of tasks. This module introduces learners to these techniques, explaining their role in removing dew, dispersing wormcasts and managing dressings to improve turf health. Learners will also explore the benefits of regular brushing to prevent disease and enhance pre-mowing conditions.

Moving Tee Markers

Tee marker placement is a key strategic task and is crucial for course management and player experience. This module teaches learners how to reposition tee markers correctly and effectively, considering wear management, course strategy and golfer safety. The importance of alignment and presentation will also be covered.

Raking & Maintaining Bunkers

Bunkers require regular maintenance to ensure consistency and fairness for play. This module introduces learners to correct raking techniques, sand distribution and edge maintenance. Learners will also understand the impact of weather and golfer use on bunker conditions.

Changing Holes

Regularly changing hole positions helps distribute wear on golf greens and refreshes the challenge and interest for the golfer. This module introduces learners to the correct method for selecting and cutting new hole locations, ensuring alignment with course design, strategy and competition requirements. Learners will also explore techniques for ensuring the old hole is filled and levelled, preparing them for proving competence to industry standard in a Level 2 apprenticeship.

Sustainability and the Environment

Sustainability is at the heart of modern Greenkeeping. This module covers a basic understanding around responsible water use, pest management, waste reduction and habitat conservation. Learners will gain an understanding of how to implement eco-friendly practices to enhance bio-diversity whilst maintaining high-quality playing conditions.
