The BIGGA Formal Education Pathway

The BIGGA-recommended formal education pathway provides a clear, inclusive, and progressive framework that supports greenkeepers at every stage of their career.

Designed to reflect the realities of modern greenkeeping, the pathway combines nationally recognised qualifications, industry-specific programmes and structured professional development, ensuring individuals can enter, progress and lead within the profession with confidence. It is underpinned by a commitment to quality, consistency, and professional recognition, while remaining flexible enough to accommodate different career starting points and learning journeys.

A defining feature of the pathway will be its recognition of prior learning and experience. Greenkeepers are not required to repeat learning they have already achieved in the workplace; instead, their existing skills and knowledge can be formally recognised and accredited, allowing them to “step on” at the most appropriate level. This approach supports progression through Entry-Level training, Levels 2 and 3 technical qualifications, leadership development at Level 4, and advanced management routes at Level 5 and beyond. Throughout the pathway, education is aligned to Continuous Professional Development, enabling individuals to build their competence, confidence and professional standing over time.

At its highest level, the pathway provides clear routes to senior leadership and professional management, culminating in recognition such as Chartered Manager status and Master Greenkeeper. Collectively, the pathway reflects BIGGA’s commitment to developing a highly skilled, respected and future-ready greenkeeping workforce. It gives members clarity on how to progress, reassurance that experience is valued, and confidence that their professional development is supported by a robust, industry-led framework.
