Future Turf Managers Initiative

Applications for FTMI Class of 2018 are now closed. Watch this space for the launch of FTMI 2019.

Jacobsen and BIGGA recognise the importance of preparing greenkeepers to take on the role of Head Greenkeeper or Course Manager. The Future Turf Managers Initiative (FTMI) has been designed to provide practical tools and guidance to help the candidates to pursue their career aspirations through this professional development conference.

Working with professional trainers, mentors, Jacobsen and BIGGA staff the candidates will leave FTMI with a clear understanding of what the future holds and a realistic overview of the expectations that come with the role of Manager.

The FTMI takes place at Ransomes Jacobsen's headquarters in Ipswich. It is an intensive three days of seminars, talks and workshops covering;

  • communications
  • budgeting
  • team management
  • CV writing and interview techniques
  • volunteering
  • Plus break-out sessions on other subjects

Who’s it for?

This event is aimed at up and coming greenkeepers who want to make the leap to Course Manager. Focusing on personal and professional development, rather than agronomy based subjects, the FTMI programme utilises the expertise of leading Course Managers, dynamic trainers and industry experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

International BIGGA members may apply, but should note that they will be expected to meet their own travel expenses.

What are the judges looking for?

The ideal candidate will show initiative, dedication to greenkeeping, a genuine interest in the industry and be actively involved in education at both a regional and national level. They will have worked as a greenkeeper for a minimum of three years and will hold their Level 2 qualification. A nominator will be required to validate each application.

The FTMI Class of 2016

FTMI is without doubt the single most important turning point in my career. With over twenty years experience within the industry, this has been the first opportunity to get a real feel for the leader role. Not only was the whole process inspiring, but thought provoking and confidence building. Networking with similar professionals within the industry has created a group of friends for life. The Mentors, apart from being professionals to aspire to, were also incredibly modest and had the patience to answer all the questions asked of them. A complete credit to our industry.

To be selected for FTMI 2016 was a huge honour, but the knowledge and experience gained from it are invaluable. The mindset of being a manager is drummed into you from the beginning and you start to look at situations from a different angle. We were so well looked after - I couldn't recommend FTMI highly enough. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the initiative to people to help further their career. All credit to BIGGA and Ransomes Jacobsen.

This programme provides you with knowledge, skills and support that money cannot buy. In three days I have learned more than I ever expected, it's given me clarity for future goals and made me some great new friends.

I would highly recommend applying for FTMI as it provided me with the confidence and knowledge I feel I need to make the jump to a management role. The highly experienced mentors are very reassuring and really try to get the most out of you as individuals. One thing is for certain, you will leave FTMI with a new focus and drive for a future in sports turf management.

FTMI is the perfectly tailored towards advancing careers. Industry leader helping to create their future replacement, a trait that runs deep in our profession that we should be proud of. I would highly recommend FTMI to anyone looking to improve themselves.

I would say to any greenkeeper thinking about applying for FTMI to go for it. I was hesitant at first because I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone, but as soon as the initiative started I knew I had made the right decision. I realised that all the candidates are in the same boat so friendships and bonds were soon formed. You use skills you don't know you have and are shown by the speakers and mentors what it takes to get your dream job in the future.

Stop waiting around for someone to hand you a career on a plate. Stand up straight, take a deep breath, and take the next step on your path to golf course management!

FTMI has been a hugely rewarding experience for me. The information I have gained will be invaluable, helping me move forward into the role of Golf Course Manager. I picked up a vast amount of information not only from the presenters and mentors but the other like minded individuals looking to progress within the industry.

FTMI Class of 2015

A great opportunity to understand all the tools required to become a competent course manager in the future. You will be taken out of your comfort zone under the guidance of some of the leading professionals in the greenkeeping and golf industry today.

I cannot stress enough the benefits of participating in the FTMI. It is without a doubt the most intensive learning experience I have encountered; highly relevant, diverse and most of all incredibly enjoyable. I feel extremely proud that I was a delegate this year, and I am certain that the relationships, confidence and competence that were established during the initiative will be intrinsic to my progression and success within the industry.

FTMI is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and share experiences, the education it provides is 1st class. You come away with so much more confidence and belief in yourself, I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to take the next step into management.

FTMI-Bringing people together, building confidence by bridging the knowledge gap and opening roads to future opportunities.

FTMI has truly been a life changing experience for me. I was perhaps nervous before I arrived, knowing that I would be put out of my comfort zone in talking to groups, meeting so many new people and facing my weaknesses. However I made a conscious decision to put all of my effort into this opportunity to make it worthwhile and I know that I will never regret that. I cant put into words the difference in confidence I feel after just two days. The mentors and speakers made such a huge effort to give us all of their attention and knowledge and I am extremely grateful for their time. If any greenkeeper or deputy is thinking of applying next year I would tell them that you lose nothing at all by trying, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity so can you afford not to at least apply?
