Primary school pupils got a hands-on introduction to greenkeeping and golf course management when Newquay Golf Club hosted a First Green STEM education event.

Newquay Golf Club hosted a First Green STEM education event
First Green uses golf courses as outdoor classrooms to engage young people with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), while also highlighting careers in greenkeeping and the wider golf industry.
Among the attendees was the son of Head Greenkeeper Dan Kendle, who praised the experience, saying his son called it “better than I thought it was going to be” – high praise from a year-six pupil!
Supported by experts from BIGGA, the RSPB, John Deere, and ICL, the day featured interactive stations focused on turf care equipment, tools like the stimpmeter, soil and fertilisers, and area measurements on the fairway. A putting competition and a wildlife talk added further variety to the action-packed event.
Dan said his team overcame nerves to deliver a fantastic day: “They read through the lesson plans, got involved, and really enjoyed it.”
The event left a lasting impression on the pupils, many of whom wrote heartfelt thank-you letters. “If one child comes out of it thinking a career in greenkeeping could be for them, then that’s a win,” said Dan.
