Entries open as BIGGA National heads to glorious Trevose
Trevose Golf Club will provide the stage for the BIGGA National Championship 2026 sponsored by Golf Finance & MJ Abbott Ltd, with bookings open now.
Set on the Cornish coast overlooking Constantine Bay, Trevose offers true links golf in a spectacular natural setting. The Championship Course, shaped by the elements and refined in recent years through a programme of work with architect Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert, combines generous fairways, expansive greens and sweeping natural sandscapes.
The venue’s Championship Course will host both days of play and the cost of entry has been frozen at £125, including a gala dinner and refreshments. There will be prizes up to the value of £1,500, including the BIGGA National Challenge Trophy (Scratch Medal over 36 holes) and the Challenge Cup (Stableford over 36 holes), along with daily winners from three different handicap categories. There is also a team event on day one, with the top four scores from each Region counting.
Following the sell-out success of the 2025 Championship at Wallasey and Royal Liverpool, additional places have been secured for this year while keeping the price unchanged.
For Course Manager Neil Ivamy, hosting the Championship represents both an honour and an opportunity. Trevose, which celebrated its centenary last year, will become the first club in Cornwall to stage the event, something he regards as a proud milestone for the venue and the region.
“It’s a nice accolade for us,” said Neil, who played in the event in 2025. “We’re looking forward to it. We hosted the Devon & Cornwall BIGGA Turkey Trot here and that went really well. We had more than 90 people sign up for that, so we’ll be well prepared when the BIGGA National comes around.”
Given that recent experience, Neil has no qualms with welcoming a large contingent of fellow greenkeepers onto his course, as no other visiting golfers are likely to be as understanding or appreciative of the condition of the course, which he expects to be excellent.
“I’m fine with it, to be honest,” he said. “Even if you do have a few problems at the time, these guys should understand more than anyone else. It’s a nice bit of pressure, but we generally try and set the course up to similar standards all year round anyway, so it shouldn’t be a big shift to get it into championship order.”
Describing the course, he added: “It’s a fun track. It’s not too penal – the fairways are quite generous and the green sites are big. The main defence is probably the wind. We’re very exposed to any wind direction, especially in November. But on a nice day you can score quite well.”
Beyond the Championship Course, Trevose offers 90-plus on-site bedrooms, a second full-length 9-hole course, a 9-hole short course and padel courts, making it as much a coastal resort as a tournament venue.
“I think what we can offer is more than just a golf tournament,” Neil added. “It should be a nice little break in Cornwall as well.” GI
John Pearson, membership services manager for the South East Region:
“The annual BIGGA National Championship gives BIGGA members the opportunity to pit themselves against their peers over two days and we are delighted to be playing at Trevose. The event will bring together golfers from across the UK with many of the competitors being put forward to play from winning local section events. The great thing about the event though is that any BIGGA member can enter and for only £125 they get two rounds of golf at these superb venues, a gala dinner after the first round and other refreshments throughout the event. We also have a fabulous prize fund on offer in excess of £1,500. Many thanks to our great sponsors Golf Finance & MJ Abbott for supporting this fabulous event. The only thing players will need to take care of is their own accommodation and fortunately Trevose have plenty of on-site options and have generously offered competitors a discounted rate.”
