Chosen from BIGGA members across the country, the 19 volunteers will join the home team during championship week, gaining first-hand experience of tournament preparation at one of the DP World Tour's flagship events in September.

Wentworth is one of the most prestigious names in world golf, recognised globally for its championship heritage, the Harry Colt-designed West Course and its long-standing role as the home of the BMW PGA Championship.

The opportunity feels particularly special for Josh Greenley, apprentice greenkeeper at The Gog Magog in Cambridgeshire, who has seen the tournament unfold from the other side of the ropes.  "As someone who has attended the BMW PGA Championship as a spectator, it's a real privilege to now be part of the team preparing the course," he said. "While I was out cutting fairways, a notification came through my headphones confirming the opportunity – it genuinely made my day.  I'm excited to experience first-hand what goes into preparing a championship venue of this calibre. Learning the precision, attention to detail, and high standards required for an event like this is something I hope to take away and apply throughout my own career in greenkeeping."

Stephen Jack, head greenkeeper at Pitreavie in Dunfermline, also believes the experience will stand him in good stead.  "Getting news of my selection filled me with inspiration," he said. "I'm so excited at being involved in such a prestigious event. I'm looking forward to meeting and being part of the wider team and seeing how it all comes together during the final week of course preparations.  I'm sure working alongside other greenkeepers in a high-profile tournament environment will be a beneficial experience for years to come."

Sam Hughes, spray technician at Ganton, is equally determined to make the most of the experience.  "It's always a privilege to be a part of these events, and I believe they provide an invaluable experience for all greenkeepers throughout their careers," he said.  "I'm looking forward to observing and learning some of the fundamental practices from a team with such a high reputation for course presentation as Wentworth. I hope that I can bring that knowledge back to my own course, where we can implement some of these practices into our day-to-day operations."
