BIGGA Conference - South East England
The largest educational event in the South East, with a day's worth of networking and learning and high class speakers in a world-renowned venue.
Each November, the five regions of BIGGA host an annual conference, providing members with the opportunity to network with their peers in their locality. The conferences are held in a high quality setting, with leading speakers ensuring an extremely worthwhile day.
Who is it for? All BIGGA members are invited to attend. BIGGA members receive a discount on tickets. Non-members are also invited to attend and get an insight into the learning opportunities offered to BIGGA members.

Programme Leader – Agronomy / Leadership & Management
Phil joined the Bernhard Academy in April 2024. With more than 35 years of experience in the turf management industry, he has worked for some of the biggest names in the business. Managing teams and golf courses including course construction, multiple golf courses and sites with turf grass surfaces including airfields and racecourses.
Phil is a Master Greenkeeper, one of only a few worldwide. He diversified his skills becoming an experienced trainer and author, supporting the leadership and management development of others within the industry. He is a regular speaker at BIGGA’s annual Continue to Learn education programme and the GCSAA’s Conference in the USA. He has been involved with many industry initiatives. His book, ‘The Power of People’ is recognised as a valuable guide to leading the modern-day team.Conference Programme
Earthworms on golf courses: how to get a cleaner green
Dr David Jones is member of the Soil Biodiversity Research Group at the Natural History Museum in London. His research includes the ecology of earthworms in UK soils. In this session he will discuss the problem of earthworm populations on golf courses, and possible ways to reduce their numbers.

Dr David Jones is a research biologist working on the ecological role of earthworms in soils. He is a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum in London, and is an external lecturer at Imperial College London teaching soil ecology. David has published more than 50 articles in scientific journals and books.

Jenny joined BIGGA in 2023 to lead on the workforce project to deliver First Green into the UK market and other initiatives to promote the greenkeeping profession. With a background in education and in the NHS, Jenny's knowledge and skills are perfectly suited to the role.

James Bruder
Head Greenkeeper (Old Course), Walton Health Golf Club
James is head greenkeeper of the Old Course at Walton Heath, which he credits as the best achievement of his career so far.
James was a member of the Future Turf Managers Initiative Class of 2019 alongside fellow BIGGA delegate Scott Corrigan, which he said was a great help in gaining his position at Walton Heath, having worked at East Berkshire in a deputy role at the time.
James volunteered for the French Open at Le Golf National in 2019 and was part of the John Deere TPC Sawgrass Volunteer Programme in 2020 that was unfortunately cut short due to COVID-19.
“I am extremely passionate about Greenkeeping and achieving the best playing surfaces possible inline with the characteristics of Walton Heath,” said James. “I have a fantastic team here of passionate greenkeepers that constantly show lots of care and dedication about everything they do.”
