First Assistant Greenkeeper

Founded in 1887, Royal St George’s Golf Club holds a unique place in golfing history as the first club outside Scotland to host The Open Championship. Having hosted The Open 15 times, most recently in 2021, the Club is committed to building upon its heritage through continued investment and the ongoing development of the course and greenkeeping operation.

We are looking for a driven, talented individual to join us as First Assistant Greenkeeper. This key leadership role forms an important part of the Senior Course Management Team and offers the successful candidate the opportunity to help maintain exceptional standards for members, guests, and championship events.

This is an exciting time to join the Club. We have recently taken delivery of a new machinery fleet, will soon begin development of a new course maintenance facility, and are preparing to host the AIG Women’s Open for the first time in 2027. The role offers advanced responsibility, strong development opportunities, and the chance to contribute to the next chapter of one of the world’s great links courses.

Key Responsibilities:

• Play a critical role in ensuring all health and safety policies and procedures are being consistently implemented
• Play a critical role in ensuring all operational systems and processes are consistently implemented
• Support the Deputy Head Greenkeeper and Head Greenkeeper in planning and delivering daily course maintenance operations
• Lead and motivate the team on a day-to-day basis, setting clear expectations and maintaining consistently high standards
• Take responsibility for course set-up and presentation, including during weekends, member events and major championships
• Supervise and develop team members through practical guidance, coaching, and effective communication
• Operate and help care for a modern fleet of turf maintenance machinery
• Contribute to course improvement projects, the new maintenance facility, and preparations for the 2027 AIG Women’s Open
• Promote safe working practices and support accurate digital record keeping and communication
• Act as a positive representative of the greenkeeping team when engaging with colleagues, members, and visitors

Ideal Candidate Profile:

• A qualified and experienced greenkeeper ready to progress into a significant leadership role
• Trustworthy, driven, dependable and organized, with exceptional attention to detail and pride in course presentation
• Proven ability to lead by example and communicate effectively within a team
• A sound understanding of modern greenkeeping practices, machinery, and irrigation systems
• Relevant spraying qualifications (PA1, PA2 and PA6) are desirable
• A strong commitment to continued professional development; links and championship preparation experience would be advantageous
