Five Myths About First Green – Busted

13 October 2025 First Green

First Green is BIGGA’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) outreach programme that helps greenkeepers host hands-on learning sessions for school pupils on the golf course. Children get to explore everything from soil science to water testing, learning about the environment, technology and greenkeeping – all linked to the national curriculum. But I know from plenty of chats with members and golf clubs that there are a few common misunderstandings that still put people off giving it a go. So, let’s bust some myths...

‘I’m not a teacher – I wouldn’t know where to start’

That’s completely understandable, but you don’t need to be a teacher. You already have the knowledge and experience to be the perfect guide. First Green isn’t about lessons at a whiteboard, it’s about sharing what you do in a way that sparks curiosity. Simple activities often work best – looking at soil profiles, testing pond water, building bug hotels. We’ve got plenty of ideas to get you started, and there’s no need to overcomplicate things.

‘Our club’s not fancy enough for this sort of thing’

First Green is for every club, whether you’ve got 9 holes or 36, a championship course or a laid-back set-up. In fact, community-based clubs are often best placed to host young people who might not otherwise set foot on a course. Schools aren’t expecting perfectly polished venues – just safe, welcoming outdoor spaces where pupils can try something new and explore potential careers.

‘We just don’t have the time, people or resources’

We get it – most teams are already stretched. But a First Green event doesn’t have to be big. It can be as simple as a one-hour visit with a few pupils and activity stations. Some clubs get help from the pro shop, junior organisers or members – and BIGGA is here with planning tips, templates and resources.

‘But we’re not looking to recruit new staff’

First Green goes beyond greenkeeping careers – it’s about giving young people a hands-on learning experience, connecting them with nature, STEM and the wider world.

‘It sounds great, but someone else will do it’

That someone is you. Just a bit of time and enthusiasm can have a big impact – on the pupils, your team and your club. GI
