I’m a greenkeeper in a Tier 3 region – will the restrictions impact what I can do at work?

The Cleveland area is currently one of those under "very high" coronavirus restrictions

New restrictions are coming into force across the UK and if you live in an area that’s listed in Tier 3, also known as ‘very high’, then you’re likely to find restrictions on what you’re able to do.

But how will golf clubs and greenkeepers be affected?

If your golf club is located in a Tier 3 area, the course will be allowed to remain open, although rules can vary based upon discussions the government will have had with your local government.

Organised sport can also continue to take place outdoors in an area classified as “very high”, so if there are any weekly medals or competitions scheduled, these can take place. Golf is especially well-suited for competitive sport to continue as it is outside and doesn’t require you to mix with anyone you do not live or are in a shared bubble with.

You will see a reduction in people travelling from other areas to play your course as the government has advised that people should avoid unnecessary travel into and out of Tier 3 areas other than for work, education and a select few other reasons. However, that does mean you will be able to continue to travel if you commute to work each day.

As for what you’re able to do while at work, your management team should have put in place a structure that enables the greenkeeping team to work safely and effectively in a socially-distanced manner, with increased hand sanitising and staggered break times, among other things. It’s worth revisiting our advice on how to keep safe while at work to check that you’re still keeping up the same standards and to remind you of some other ways to keep everybody healthy.

With winter on its way, your management team should also be considering ways to enable the team to take lunches and other breaks in a warm and dry location somewhere at the golf club and to shower and change out of your work clothes at the end of your shift.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic BIGGA has produced advice on how to work safely, while also providing countless opportunities for our members to continue their professional development. Check out our COVID-19 Hub for more information.
