What on Earth are we doing? A fun and refreshingly simple perspective on why golf courses exist
In a world of information, systems, processes, projects and constant time pressures, it can be useful to return to basics; to pause for a moment and reflect on what we do, and why we do it. This is especially important for greenkeepers and course managers — often under the pressure of justifying decisions and continually navigating the balance between golfer expectations and financial, social and environmental responsibility.
This seminar revisits some of the simple truths about golf courses: what they are for, what they provide, and why purpose matters as much as performance. We offer a fresh perspective to help greenkeepers and course managers see their work in a wider context, reconnect with the core value of the golfing experience, and think more clearly about the past principles, present realities and future pressures that will continue to shape the industry.
Attendees will also receive follow-up Sustainable Golf Course Management communication materials reflecting the presentation content.
Learning outcomes:
- Strengthen critical thinking and improve decision-making by reflecting on the fundamental purpose of golf at both club and sector scale
- Enhance situational awareness by recognising how environmental, social and economic factors shape operational priorities, innovation and adaptation
- Understand the wider value of the golfing experience, using purpose-driven reasoning to deliver meaningful, long-term outcomes for players, staff, the club and the community
- Develop clear, confident language to communicate the strategic value of sustainable course management decisions to members, committees, senior leadership and the wider industry
