Handsworth Golf Club is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Course Manager to lead the management and continued development of our 18-hole parkland course. Established in 1895, we are a private members’ club with a proud heritage, a welcoming membership, and a clear commitment to ongoing course improvement and sustainability.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall presentation, maintenance, and future development of the course and practice facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical expertise, effective staff management, a strategic mindset, and a passion for delivering consistently high playing standards.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead, manage, and develop the Greenkeeping Team, including monitoring performance, staff training, and safe working practices

Plan and implement weekly, seasonal, and long-term maintenance and cultural programmes

Ensure the effective operation, care, and maintenance of the machinery fleet

Manage and repair irrigation systems (Rainbird MDPE) and monitor water usage

Maintain robust health, safety, and environmental compliance across all activities

Support the Green and other Directors in course development planning and budget management

Work with the Board and Competitions Director to ensure cultural practices and project work are scheduled and executed efficiently

Apply sound agronomic, biological, and chemical knowledge to manage turf sustainably and effectively

Prepare reports, plans, and operational documentation using appropriate software

Communicate clearly and professionally with members, committees, colleagues, and external contractors
Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
Desirable
-
Chainsaw and tree felling qualifications
-
Experience in drainage installation and construction works (e.g., bunkers, tees, paths)
-
Competent digger operator
-
A golfer, or someone with a strong appreciation of the game
Essential
-
Minimum NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Sports Turf / Greenkeeping
-
PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certification
-
At least 10 years greenkeeping experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role

Strong knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, agronomy, disease control, and machinery operation

Ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff

Computer-literate, with the ability to produce reports, plans, and budgets

Excellent communication skills and a mature, professional demeanour

Sound understanding of golf course playability requirements and the dynamics of a private members’ club
Remuneration & Benefits:

Full-time contract of 40 hours per week, with weekend and overtime flexibility as required to meet weather, playing, and seasonal demands
