Preventative overseeding with bentgrasses: an essential disease prevention tactic
Synopsis: Microdochium patch affects many cool season turf grass species including annual meadow grass and perennial ryegrass, especially Poa annua, and is one of the primary diseases on UK golf greens.
With the loss of key fungicides such as iprodione removing the safety net of using curative chemicals to combat this key turf disease, greenkeepers must look to strengthen the make-up of their greens by coupling the use of disease resistant cultivars with appropriate cultural practises that maximise the population of beneficial grasses which will in turn contribute to improved preventative control.

Biography: With almost 30-years’ experience in the amenity, turfgrass and landscaping sectors, Richard is well known to greenkeepers across the UK. His career in the amenity sector started at the tender age of 14 when he began working at a Lincolnshire plant nursery. He subsequently left school at 16 to work in the landscaping sector in the north east of England before going to university to earn a degree in horticulture. He then went on to work on a turf farm before working for two years in Australia.
He joined Germinal in 2002 and, with a wealth of sector-specific experience, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s amenity business: from working with growers to plan the production of UK-grown grass seed crops, to liaising with the breeding programme at IBERS (Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences) and overseas seed breeders to select and develop new and exciting grass cultivars.
Richard is FACTS (Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) qualified and will happily talk at length about how to get the best results from golf and sports pitch specific grass seed mixtures.
