London Borough of Hillingdon is the second largest borough in London, located 14 miles from central London. It operates three popular public golf courses and a 40 bay driving range; Haste Hill, Ruislip and Uxbridge Golf Courses. Haste Hill and Ruislip each possess 18 holes and Uxbridge offers 12 holes. These courses form ‘Golf Hillingdon’ and welcome on average over 69,000 rounds of golf per year.
About the job
As a Senior Head Greenkeeper you will join Hillingdon’s golf team of 27 staff.
To oversee the daily conditioning and presentation of our three golf courses we are looking for a professional greenkeeper, who combines practical skills with disciplined leadership.
This is both a supervisory and participative role, as such you will possess customer focus with a good team/work ethic.
You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and delivery of the Council’s course management policy. To this end, you will possess the necessary organisational and communication skills to ensure consistency and continuity in maintenance operations.
It will involve budget planning and control for the procurement of all materials, equipment and hire. This includes any project work such as agreed course improvements and larger renovations works.
The Council have very recently invested in the latest Rainbird StratusLT irrigation system and a new fleet of John Deere turf maintenance equipment at Haste Hill Public Golf Course. A vital element of this position’s role will be the management of this investment to maximise its potential for the playing surfaces and our customers.
Essential requirements of this position are:
- Minimum of three years’ experience as Deputy Head Greenkeeper
- Relevant industry recognised greenkeeping qualifications in Sportsturf management
- PA1, PA2 and PA6 spraying certificates
- Chainsaw operators Licence
- Knowledge, set-up and operation of a computer based Irrigation system
About the person
You will have a minimum of six years practical greenkeeping experience and worked successfully in a team environment.
Both practical and theory knowledge of agronomic techniques for fine turf are required with experience of maintaining Poa annua dominated surfaces on heavy clay parkland.
Experience of operation and maintenance of a wide range of specialist golf course equipment. You will possess a full driving licence as you will be required to travel around the Borough of Hillingdon.
You will be professional and have good communication skills. IT skills are a must, including the use of word processing and spreadsheets. Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.
This key position requires commitment and attention to detail with the ability to play golf to a reasonable standard. You will have strong leadership skills, have the ability to motivate others and have a positive outlook.

Your hours of work will be annualised as required in line with the needs of the service. You will be required to work 39 hours per week during the summer period (1 April – 30 September) and 33 hours per week during the winter period (1 October – 31 March). Your hours and pattern of work will be agreed with your line manager.
