A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Head Greenkeeper to join an outstanding seaside club. Scarborough North Cliff is a busy, progressive private members club situated on the Yorkshire coast, with an 18-hole course and short game practice facilities, designed by James Braid with beautiful coastal views and undulating tree lined parkland.

Role Detail

The role of Head Greenkeeper is a key role within the Club and through leading a small team of professional Greenkeepers you will ensure that the expected standards of the course are maintained at all times.

The postholder will be responsible for the management, maintenance, care and overall presentation of the course and supporting areas.  It is the role holder's responsibility to maintain all playing surfaces in line with the clubs Course Policy document ensuring that the course offers a consistent challenge and enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels of ability, whilst being responsive to climate changes and the course needs.

Key Responsibilities

1.Grounds Maintenance:

  • Oversee all aspects of turf care, including mowing, watering, fertilization, and pest control.
  • Manage the maintenance of bunkers, greens, tees, fairways, and rough areas to ensure they are in optimal condition for play.
  • Implement effective irrigation systems and water management practices to conserve resources and maintain healthy turf.
  • Monitor and address turf diseases, weeds, and other issues that may affect playing surfaces.
  • Review and implement changes required to drainage.

2.Landscaping and Ornamental Features:

  • Coordinate the planting, pruning, and maintenance of trees, shrubs.

3.Environmental Stewardship:

  • Implement sustainable land management practices to preserve and enhance the natural habitat of the golf course.
  • Educate staff and golfers on environmental initiatives and best practices for maintaining a healthy and sustainable course.

4.Staff Management and Training:

  • Lead a team of groundskeepers, providing guidance, training, and supervision as needed 
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection, training and appraisal of staff when required.
  • Participate in a planned program of professional development in order to maintain growth in professional skills and knowledge.
  •  Attend and contribute to the regular strategic Greens Committee meetings, identifying areas for possible improvement and making recommendations to the Committee
  • Schedule and coordinate work assignments to ensure efficient use of resources and timely completion of tasks.
  • Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork among staff members. 
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, members, visitors and the Board of Directors and externally with suppliers/contractors.
  • To promote equality and diversity for staff

5.Budgeting and Resource Management:

  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, including expenses for equipment, supplies, and labour.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to optimize resource utilization.
  • Maintain accurate records of expenditures, inventory, and maintenance activities.

6.Management and Course Improvement Projects:

  • Collaborate with golf club management to plan and execute course renovations, enhancements, and construction projects.
  • Monitor the progress of improvement projects and ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications. 
  • The ability to provide informative regular effective communications via social media and our members hubs and forums. (training provided with support)
  • When required, to attend and contribute to Board meetings and to contribute to the monthly Greens Report provided to the Board by the Greens Director.
  • To develop new techniques or processes to be deployed on the course for more efficient working.
  •  Develop future project works plans in conjunction with the 5/10 year course management plan.
  •  Review course policy documents and amend where necessary.
  • Identify any major course investments required and ensure timely scheduling into business planning.
  • Develop/determine and document contingency planning for prolonged dry/wet spells of weather.
  • Knowledge of Irrigation systems and repair skills to all machinery
  • Golf Course renovation and construction experience
  • Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance practices accordingly.

7.Course equipment:

  • Operate machinery, tools, equipment and materials to achieve and maintain the desired course standards.
  • Ensure that all members of the team who are operating machinery, tools and equipment do so in a safe manner and are appropriately trained in accordance with Health & Safety procedures.
  • Ensure that all Health & Safety risks assessments and staff training records are kept up to date and reviewed on a regular basis.


  • At least five years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Level 3 qualification or above in Sports Turf Management or equivalent.
  • PA1, PA2 & PA6 Pesticide training certificates.
  • Extensive experience in golf course maintenance, with a strong understanding of turfgrass management practices and landscaping techniques.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, agronomy, and pest management principles.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a team of employees.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with staff, members, and external stakeholders.
