About Hartley Wintney Golf Club:
 
Hartley Wintney Golf Club, founded in 1891, is a highly regarded private members’ club situated in North Hampshire, near the borders of Surrey and Berkshire. With a vision for the future, the club has made significant investments in the course since expanding to 18 holes in 2000, balancing a respect for tradition with modern improvements.
 
The original 9-hole course was designed by James Braid, renowned for winning the Open 5 times during his career and known for his significant contributions to golf course architecture.
 
 
The Role:  
 
We are seeking a proactive, passionate, and ambitious individual to join the management team of one of the premier parkland golf clubs in Hampshire. The ideal candidate will have the vision and drive to elevate the reputation and status of Hartley Wintney Golf Club. You should be confident, well-versed in the game of golf, and skilled at building strong relationships. Your determination and ability to create an exceptional experience while staying on budget and surpassing expectations will be key to your success in this role.

 

The Candidate:
 
This is a hands-on role that requires a strong understanding of golf course operations, along with excellent soft and hard persuasion skills, and a sharp focus on execution.
You should be driven to raise standards across all areas and enhancing the Club’s reputation through positive member and visitor experiences. You will lead a team effectively and work with minimal supervision from the General Manager and Greens Committee.
Thriving in a club environment, you will need to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting clearly defined objectives. A desire to grow alongside the club and its leadership team is essential for the role.
 
 

Experience:

Your experience should be commensurate with the role and in addition, the following is desired:

  • 5-10 years’ relevant experience – ideally in a similar role showing clear achievements
  • A good understanding of parkland golf course management is desirable.
  • Professional qualifications suitable for this senior position
Skills and Competencies:
  • Possess a wealth of technical green-keeping and agronomy skills together with impeccable standards of course preparation, nurtured over many years
  • Be familiar with the workings of a members’ Golf Club
  • Have the ability and experience to handle different situations in a calm and positive manner
  • Have the ability and experience to inspire a team of people, all with differing outlooks and ambitions, to achieve the objectives set by the Club
  • Show high standards of professionalism with strong (and clear) written and verbal communication skills both internally and with third parties
  • Have a methodical approach, an eye for detail and be committed to delivering to the highest standard
Responsibilities:
 
The Course Manager will be entrusted with the maintenance, operations and management of the golf course and greenkeeping team. It is important that Hartley Wintney Golf Course is carefully managed to produce high quality playing surfaces whilst managing inputs to the golf course to conserve and protect the environment which is unique to the location. General responsibilities include:     
  • Supervising the construction and maintenance of all aspects of the golf course
  • Supervising the maintenance and repair of all course maintenance and construction equipment
  • Rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the Club's Committees and/or General Manager as required
  • Participating in Committee meetings and attending Board meetings if required
  • Managing, training, and developing the Greenkeeping team
Service:
  • Maintain a professional and welcoming approach at all times when dealing with members, guests, visitors, contractors & suppliers
  • Manage the golf course and the green keeping team as directed by the General Manager, in accordance with the club’s golf course maintenance policy and health & safety policy
  • Carry out effective turf maintenance through the establishment of schedules and maintenance programmes which maximise efficiency on and off the course
  • Prepare the course for play including marking hazards, grounds for repair and ensuring tee markers, bunkers, golf furniture and general greens maintenance is carried out
  • Manage and supervise the preparation and maintenance of all course machinery
  • Operate and maintain irrigation systems
  • Maintain drainage systems
  • Plan and manage the control of weeds, pests and disease
  • Attend meetings and communicate information to staff, management and members
  • Provide input and support future development and renovation projects of the course and associated facilities, through good working relationships with architects, contractors, builders and construction workers
Budgeting & Finance:
  • Propose annual budgets to cover general maintenance, course upkeep, staffing and machinery
  • Monitor and control departmental expenditure in-line with budgets as agreed by the Board
  • Take responsibility for supplier selection, procurement and ensuring positive relationships are maintained
  • Make recommendations for and implement cost saving/control measures where appropriate
  • Prepare and manage a long-term plan with regards to fleet management and capital expenditure
  • Provide a monthly review of department expenditure to the General Manager to cover expenditure, accruals, and releases in line with the monthly budget and P&L
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies, ensuring safe and effective control of all stored materials and grounds maintenance products
Staff:
  • Lead, motivate and develop your team to install a consistent level of performance and delivery
  • Effectively brief the team to allow them to work efficiently and achieve the aims set by the Club
  • Allocate daily work tasks in line with expected course usage
  • Support the individual development of each member of the greens team
  • Take full responsibility for the training and induction of the green keeping team and ensure that all records are kept up to date
  • Communicate effectively and take responsibility for the appearance, conduct and performance of all members of the green keeping team
  • Carry out performance appraisals of the team at no greater than annual intervals
  • Support the general manager with the HR functions of the greens team with regards to effective management of absenteeism, performance and disciplinary issues as they may arise
Standards / Health & Safety:
  • Produce and review as required, Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work and a Chemical Inventory, ensuring that periodic checks are completed as required
  • Ensure that the correct procedures are followed regarding the use of all machinery, fertilizers and chemicals
  • Always promote and enforce safe working practices, reporting any accidents or near misses using the stipulated channels
  • Report on the condition of the golf course environment
  • Take all responsible steps to protect the health, safety and welfare of all employees, visitors, members and contractors, by following legislative guidelines for the preparation, use and disposal of chemicals, the safe use of tools, plant and equipment and promoting safe working practices in all areas of operation at the course
  • Ensure that all faults and defects relating to the condition of the course, equipment, tools, building etc. within the remit of grounds maintenance are reported to the general manager and or course director
  • Communicate risks and hazards to the appropriate person
  • Comply with company policies, rules and procedures at all times
  • Work as part of a team and actively demonstrate a willingness to support and achieve the overall business objectives
  • Keep abreast of modern advances in materials, methods and machinery in green keeping by e.g. being a member of and attending meetings of the British and International Green Keepers Association (BIGGA) and advise the Club accordingly
 Security:  
  • Ensure that all premises are secured and locked prior to leaving
  • Have a thorough understanding of club theft preventative procedures
  • Ensure that the emergency call out list is up to date
  • Ensure that there are up to date contact/address details for key holders 
  • Ensure that only authorised key holders have access to secured club premises 
Remuneration:  
 
 An attractive salary package commensurate with experience and in line with BIGGA guidelines is on offer.
