BIGGA was sad to hear of the passing of life member Richard Maltby, a former chairman and president of the Sheffield Section.
Richard, 78, was known as Neil to all his friends and colleagues in the sectionand his close friend Gordon Brammah, head greenkeeper at Hallamshire Golf Club, described him as a "lively character with an infectious laugh and a great sense of fun".
Richard, pictured above alongside Peter Alliss and representatives of Bernhard at an education day in 2006, was a loyal servant to the Sheffield Section, serving as a committee member, chairman and president for many years. A keen and able golfer, he represented the section at many events and particularly enjoyed playing in the national tournament.
Gordon said: "He was a skilled and experienced greenkeeper who finished his career at Wheatley Golf Club after stints at some prestigious golf clubs including Woodall Spa. A familiar face at Harrogate, he was happy to wander the halls meeting and chatting to old and new friends, reminiscing and offering sage advice.
"I was personally grateful for Neil for his help and guidance as I followed him into the roles of section chairman and president, positions we were both very proud to have held."
Neil was honoured to have been made a life member of BIGGA in recognition of his efforts throughout his career.
Outside of golf he was a great family man who also loved to travel, especially to Germany.
Gordon added: "On behalf of the members of the Sheffield Section I would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to his family, who I know will miss him greatly."
Richard passed away on 17 August 2017.
