Seminar 12 - Can Certain Surfactants have Biostimulant-like Activity

Date:
24th January 2018
Location:
Queen's Suite, HCC
Host:
BTME
Cost:
Free

Plant biostimulants contain substance(s) and/or micro organisms whose function when applied to plants or the rhizosphere is to stimulate natural processes to enhance/benefit nutrient uptake, nutrient eficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, and crop quality. This seminar will review research from European and global sources providing evidence on how alkyl-terminated block copolymers commonly used to regulate and improve plant water balance. Furthermore, this can improve the eficiency of the plant’s metabolism, increase plant tolerance to and recovery from abiotic stresses, facilitate nutrient assimilation, translocation and use, and enhance certain physicochemical properties of the soil.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Have a better understanding of how modifying the soil environment can influence plant physiological responses
  • Understand alternative use strategies to improve turf performance under abiotic stress conditions
  • Have management options to improve fertility effectiveness while limiting fertiliser inputs
