Lifetime Achievement Award for George Brown

George Brown, Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Turnberry Hotel, received the BIGGA Lifetime Achievement Award at a presentation during Harrogate Week ’09.

George was brought up in a golfing family. His father was Caddie Master at Princes Golf Club and his mother a Cook in the club kitchen and George was immersed in the game as caddie, greenkeeper and County Player in his native Kent.

He was appointed Course Manager at Turnberry in late 1985 just months before the Ailsa course hosted The Open Championship for the second time and since then he has steered Turnberry to the position where the Ailsa is ranked the number one course in UK and Ireland by two top golf magazines and has played host to numerous championships including the 1994 Open Championship and will again host The Open this July.

“I was genuinely gobsmacked to get this award and just feel most humbled by it,” said George, who was BIGGA National Chairman in 2003

He will retire from his current position after The Open but continue to work at Turnberry in a consultancy role.

He joins Sir Michael Bonallack OBE, Walter Woods BEM and Jack McMillan MBE, as a recipient of the BIGGA Lifetime Achievement Award.
